Learn how to transform mis-matched glass vases or thrift store finds using spray paint in our simple tutorial below.
Who else out there has a stash of mis-matched vases?? I seem to collect them over time, and they pop up under my kitchen sink, in my pantry and in various cupboards throughout the house. When I took the time to gather them together, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of shapes, textures and sizes that I had collected. But, what could I do with them to put them to good use? I ended up spray painted them all black, and just love the way the entire look turned out!!
Today, we are sharing this simple DIY transformation using those clear, mis-matched glass vases that you may have on hand. Keep scrolling for fun before and after photos, and the simple how-to.
Spray Painted Vases: The Before and After
Here is a small sampling of my clear bud vase collection. After locating my clear vases, I selected a variety to use in this project. I was in search of varying heights, textures and shapes. Even though I had a great selection to choose from, I also paid a visit to our local thrift store to see what else I could find. I picked up another 2-3 vases with fun textures, including the one that resembles a pineapple. Once I had chosen the vases to spray paint, and the general formation that I would use as my Fall centerpiece, I was ready to get crafting!
Can you believe how dramatic a simple coat of black spray paint can make? Now, it’s your turn to paint!!
How to Spray Paint Glass Vases
First, wash and dry your glass vases. Before painting, be sure that your surfaces are dry, as the paint may bubble or poorly adhere to wet surfaces.
Once your vases are dry, spray a coat of black spray paint (or the color of your choice), following the instructions on the can. Typically, you spray approximately 10-12” from your surface. And, you will need to spray more than one coat. We used black gloss spray paint from Testors Craft and applied 2-3 coats per vase, working in sections to ensure full coverage.
One of the things that I love about spray paint, is that it dries quickly. This project is something that you can complete in mere minutes, over the course of a day. And, the vases will be ready for use within just hours of your final coat.
Choosing Florals to Complement
What type of flowers pair well with a solid black vase? Well, virtually any color works wonders with black!! But, if you are in search of florals to complement black spray painted vases specifically for the Fall season, here are my suggestions:
- All white
- Orange- variety of hues
- Orange, yellow and white
- Green and white
- Purple- variety of hues
For our centerpiece, we mixed seasonal orange, yellow and white flowers for a modern Fall tablescape.
