Is anyone else a linen horder?? Just me?!? I LOVE linens. Really, linens of almost any kind. But of all linen types, my favorite is most definitely the napkin. I always find that they can add just the pop of color, thread of interesting texture or design element to any table. But, I cannot always find exactly the napkin I am looking for…..so, that is where DIY comes into play! I am sharing 3 simple DIY napkin techniques that take only minutes, using items that you probably already have at home. Who knew that paper straws, plastic bottle caps and forks could be so much fun as painting tools!! Keep scrolling for the how-to.
Fabric Paint with a Plastic Fork
Who has a plastic fork (or 100) in their house?? I love the way a simple pattern can add texture to any fabric. Create your own hash motif using a plastic fork and fabric paint on a cotton napkin. Simply press your fork into the fabric paint, and work in lines creating an alternating hash texture on your napkin. For our DIY painted napkin, we chose purple as it just seemed to POP off a crisp white napkin. For a fun tablescape design, alternate 2 colors of paint onto 2 colors of napkins; using a variety of complementary colors within a tablescape adds visual interest and dimension.
How to Paint Napkins with a Paper Straw
Paper straws are another common household item that is ideal for adding texture to a fabric napkin. To recreate the look at home, select a paper straw, then using your chosen color of fabric paint, add dots in a selected pattern on your fabric napkin. You could create a uniform or random pattern using this technique; both are fun! For a thicker circle, dip your straw into the paint every 1-3 times. For a more subtle pattern, with bold circles and faded circles, dip your straw into the paint every 4-6 times.
How to DIY Napkins with a Plastic Bottle Cap
Our last technique to paint fabric napkins with ordinary items uses a simple plastic bottle cap. For this technique, simply dip a small or large plastic bottle cap into your chosen fabric paint and add dots to your fabric napkin. We chose to create a uniform look with even spacing, and alternating rows. However, you could create any pattern imaginable using this simple household item.
We cannot wait to see what you create at home using one or all of these DIY fabric paint techniques. Please be sure to drop us a comment, or share your creations in our group on Facebook; we would love to see!
