If you love to decorate for the holidays like me, you likely enjoy switching out décor throughout the seasons. While I love each and every single holiday, Christmas is certainly my favorite to decorate my home for. Since we specialize in printables, I am always looking for ways to incorporate new designs over my mantle. However, I certainly don’t want to leave marks or make new holes with each design whim I come up with. So, that is why I turn to products like Command™ Hooks available at Walmart. Modern or Traditional Holiday Color Palette?
If we took a quick tour of your home during the holidays, would we see traditional greens and reds, or do you opt for a more colorful color palette? Personally, I like a little of both.
If you are looking for some alternative color palette ideas, consider the following:
- Pink & Teal
- Black & White
- Sage, Orange and Gray
- Pink, Blue & Green
- Metallics
- Monochromatic Colors
Once you have chosen a color palette for your décor, you can begin searching for decor items to create your modern mantle.
How to Create Visual Interest for Your Mantle
Many of the same design printables apply to both stunning tablescapes and holiday mantles. When working to pull together your colorful holiday mantle, there are a few principles to consider: color, texture and layers. Texture refers to the overall surface quality or feel to an object. To build visual texture, choose items that offer difference surfaces; smooth, rough, and even different materials (i.e. greenery, fabrics, metal, wood, painted, printed).
For example, we draped holiday greenery across our holiday mantle, then hung printable posters using both Command™ Small Wire Hooks and Command™ Large Picture Hanging Strips. I love that these hooks and strips allow me to decorate without damage to my walls or mantle and that they are easy to put up and take down. Our DIY Christmas stockings brought in additional colors and the warmth of fabric. The mixture of paper, fabric, and greenery is how we added texture to our colorful holiday mantle.
Layers were added with our selection of posters as well as the items chosen to hang on the mantle itself. We hung a trio of posters onto the wall above the mantle; two were hung onto the wall itself using Command™ Large Picture Hanging Strips and Command® Small Wire Hooks. Then, we added our DIY Christmas stockings using Command™ Medium Designer Hooks and a small printable Fa, La, La, La, La banner hung using Command™ Small Wire Hooks. For your own holiday mantle, consider hanging items in an asymmetrical manner, overlapping slightly for a modern appearance.
Tips for Layering Holiday Posters
If you change the wall hangings above your mantle during the holiday season, you may be wondering how to best hang them. Should you hang one item or a grouping? Should they all be hung, or should some lean against the wall?
Here are a few tips to consider for wall hanging selections:
- Single items are best hung centered above your mantle, or centered on the mantle leaning against the wall
- Collections of items are most visually appealing when grouped in odd numbers; 3, 5, 7
- If you are hanging a collection of images or posters, choose complementary colors and designs
- For a group of wall hangings, consider a combination of leaning items against the wall and hanging some above the mantle
