Choo Choo, Dean turns 2! We love the idea of a train theme for young children. Dean’s party was full of color, fun activities for party guests and adorable party favors. We are sharing our train birthday party ideas for hosting at home below.
Train Birthday Party Decorations
When hosting an outdoor event, be sure to consider weather factors such as wind. To avoid table linens blowing around, choose a fitted option such as spandex. These linens will offer a similar look to traditional floor length-linens, but will stay put in the wind.
Train Dessert & Snack Ideas
In keeping with the train theme, we served bulk snacks within their own train box containers. Create your own using shoeboxes wrapped in paper; then add 2” black paper circles for wheels. We displayed each box on a hay bale to add height to our tablescape.
When selecting desserts to offer for a birthday party, we recommend 2-3 variations. For a budget friendly party, choose a variety of cupcakes versus a decorated birthday cake. Or, choose a 8-10” buttercream cake and add toppers versus one that requires hand-worked details with fondant.
At Dean’s birthday party, 3 dessert selections were offered Mini cupcakes were dressed up with personalized, printable cupcake toppers. Personalized train sugar cookies were displayed on white platters. And, the highlight of the dessert table was most definitely this 2-tier custom birthday cake, complete with fondant train details.
Seated children’s tables were draped in a red plastic linen that was secured using clips. The center of the table had simple potted flowers along with printed coloring sheets and crayons to keep little hands busy. Throughout the yard were bunches of fun latex train balloons.
Train Birthday Party Activities
For an outdoor event, pull out your child’s riding toys and yard toys for guests to enjoy. For younger party guests, consider filling an inflatable pool with plastic balls to create an instant “ball pit”. And budget permitting, consider renting a trackless train to offer party guests rides throughout the party.
Train Birthday Party Favors
Party guests each took home a bundle of fun train theme dress-up items that could be picked up at the “Baggage Claim”. A wooden train shaped whistle, child’s conductor hat and red bandanna were wrapped in jute cord along with a personalized favor tag.
