In this post, you will learn how to choose flower colors to create stunning, yet affordable arrangements for home entertaining.
“Flowers are like friends; They bring color to your world.” – Unknown
There is so much beauty in simplicity! Over the years, I have found my design style to become simpler, focusing more on enhancing inherent beauty and authentic moments. While I am a sucker for gorgeous florals, they aren’t always feasible or practical when hosting guests in-home or within a venue on a budget. So, I was inspired to create 3 beautiful and affordable floral concepts that anyone (including YOU!) can recreate at home! Keep scrolling for more deets on our 3 DIY floral arrangements, and a refresher course on the classic color wheel.
1. Combine Complementary Colors
How do you choose an appealing combination or pairing of colors when putting together a floral arrangement or centerpiece? Who remembers learning about the color wheel in school!?! My mother was an art teacher for many years, so this handy tool was part of our daily lives.
In simplest terms, the color wheel is a chart representing the relationship between colors; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and so on. Using the color wheel to choose floral combinations is one of the best ways to produce a gorgeous end product.
The most dynamic, yet simple color scheme, is created when colors that are opposite of one another on the color wheel are paired. Opposite colors are also referred to as complementary colors. A few examples of complementary colors would include yellow and purple, red and green, green and purple, and blue and orange.
This particular grouping of flowers combines green and purples, through the use of monotone green bottles and as shades in purple flowers. The total cost of this affordable flower arrangement is between $35-45 including the bottles.
2. Create a Monochromatic Palette
To me, nothing is more inspiring than visiting a wholesale florist or grower to browse the variety of flowers available! I am always amazed at how many varietals are available. For a quick, yet stunning floral grouping, go monochromatic on the color wheel. What exactly does that mean? Choose a variety of shades within a particular color. For example, in our simple grouping below, we selected 4-5 yellow floral varieties. Different textures, shades and heights within a single color hue add instant variety to an arrangement. Monochromatic arrangements are one of my favorite DIY floral arrangement tips.
In an effort to allow the florals to be the focal point of the arrangement, we selected a variety of clear vases in different shapes and heights as their vessels. If you look around your own home, you likely have a number of clear glass vases that could be utilized. Or, if you are in need of more to complete a look, head to your local resale shops of Dollar Stores to pick up a few more. For our flowers, we picked up this variety at our local Trader Joes for under $20. To stick within your budget, select flowers that are in season, and allow the selection to dictate the direction of your DIY floral arrangements.
3. Create an Analogous Color Scheme for your DIY Floral Arrangements
Our final floral tip when it comes to choosing colors and arrangements, is to choose an analogous palette. This describes choosing colors that are side by side on a color wheel. For example, pairing orange and yellow, blue and purple, red and purple, or pink and purple together.
My mother is a long time collector of milk glass vases, which were the perfect foundation for showcasing this variety of purple and pink blooms. When choosing the particular flowers out for this project, I literally grabbed any flower stems that I could find in my color palette. Some were single buds, some were bunches, but they all fell either in the purple or pink hue. When combined, these colors provide a subtle, yet harmonious arrangement. Similarly to the two DIY floral arrangements above, you can create a full centerpiece for a round or rectangular table for roughly $20. If you don’t own white milk glass and need some for a large event, be sure to check your local resale shops and even glassware rental companies. You will be surprised at what you may find available!
