Summer is in full swing! While we all love to dream about summers full of fun all-day long with our kiddos, it is inevitable that we will hear, “I’m Bored” at some point! So, we are sharing some “Summer Boredom Buster” ideas to keep everyone entertained along with FREE printables to create your own basket or box of goodies.
We organized our summer activities into 4 categories: Outside Playtime, Create Something, Let’s Help With & Quiet Time Activities.
Next, we created a list of activities for each of our categories and started organizing. We packaged a variety of ideas, games and activities into each of the 4 categories and then wrote the names/descriptions onto the corresponding bookmarked shaped cards. And finally, we placed our pre-filled cards into a jar for drawing each time we heard the phrase, “Mommy I’m Bored”. By spending time organizing activities in advance, we had a summertime worth of ideas to keep everyone entertained!
Here are some possible outside playtime ideas for your Summer Boredom Basket:
I am a huge fan of hands on activities, so this category was super fun for me to organize for our kiddos. I searched online and in a variety of science and art books for ideas that I could organize in advance to keep the kids busy! For each of the chosen crafts/DIY activities, I put needed supplies and a photograph or photocopy of the instructions into a gallon size ziplock bag. I also added several prepackaged craft kits to make things easier on myself. By organizing in clear bags, it was easy to not only see the choices available, but to put the craft or DIY together, as everything was ready to go!
Here are some ideas for your “Create Something” category:
Let’s Help With
For this bucket/basket, brainstorm ideas for your kids to help around the house or general good deeds to assist members of your community.
Here are some ideas to help get you started:
- Find Five Toys to Donate
- Organize Clothes into Keep/Donate piles based on season and size
- Create Handmade Cards to Drop off at your Local Senior Facility
- Help Mom with a Chore of Her Choice
Quiet Time Activities
For those of us with a child/children that still nap and others that don’t, quiet time is sacred! I needed to create activities that my older children could participate in during quiet time to keep them engaged and entertained, while permitting the other children to rest peacefully.
These are some suggested quiet time activities:
- Arts & Crafts
- Science Experiments
- Card Games
- Board Games
Another fun category to add to your Summer Boredom Busters list is “Wild Card” where they can choose their own activity, or for smaller kids, can grab a toy/game of their choice from a Treasure Chest. My kids have loved playing with items from our Oriental Trading Tropical Treasure Chest! I mean…how can you go wrong with tropical temporary tattoos, mini notepads, art stamps, paddle toys, water toys & clappers!?!
Create your own Summer Boredom Busters kit using some of these ideas and our FREE printable signage (download below).
