“Here I opened wide the door;—–darkness there, and nothing more.” Edgar Allan Poe’s, The Raven
‘The Raven’ is notably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous piece of literary work. In Poe’s The Raven, the author designates the Raven as a symbol of mournful, never ending remembrance. Throughout the book, the narrator shares his sorrow for the loss of his perfect maiden and ongoing references are made to a door that was closed, that will never reopen.
As a book lover myself, I wanted to give a nod to this literary masterpiece in the form of a slightly spooky, Raven cocktail for Halloween. We even displayed our Halloween cocktails atop an Edgar Allan Poe novel, with fun ravens keeping watch. Keep scrolling for the full recipe. Jump to Recipe
The Raven Cocktail Variations
The look and feel of this Halloween cocktail are created through the use of colored liquor. It’s super simple to create, and it is sure to be a hit at your Halloween party!
For fun, here are some variations to The Raven cocktail:
- For a truly “black” colored cocktail, use 2.5 oz black vodka, ¾ oz fresh lime juice and ½ of simple syrup for a fun spooky twist.
- Stir in edible pearl dust into any of these recipes for a fun shimmering effect. You can find edible pearl dust in the baking section of most craft stores.
- For a fruiter version, mix together 2 oz black vodka, 1 oz orange juice and 4 oz cranberry juice reduced by half on the stove over medium-low heat.
Tip: If you cannot find black vodka in your local retail stores, you can add food coloring to any traditional vodka for the same visual effect.
Tips for Handling Dry Ice
My favorite component to this Raven cocktail is the spooky smoke it gives off thanks to the amazing wonder which is dry ice. Our local grocery stores offer dry ice by the pound near the traditional bags of ice. Dry ice is extremely cold (-109.3 degrees F)! So, it is important to handle it with care when adding it to any recipe.
Here are some tips to consider when handling dry ice:
- Do not store dry ice in a sealed container. Keep it in the bags that you purchase it within a cooler until you are ready to use it.
- Do not handle it with your bare hands. It can cause immediate frostbite. Use tongs and/or gloves when handling it.
- For cocktail recipes, only a pea sized amount of dry ice is needed per glass to create the shown effect.
