How To Use Plaid in a Holiday Tablescape

In this post, we are sharing some simple ideas for incorporating plaid into your holiday tablescape.

In our home, the holidays are truly magical. Each year, we make a family bucket list of sorts, containing must-do items to experience together during the season; holiday light tours, festivals, giving back to the community, treat making and celebrating with friends and family over a home cooked meal are a few that made the top of this year’s list.

To evoke the magic of the holidays at your next dinner party, follow our simple tips for an Al Fresco dining experience to remember.

Choose a Color Palette for Your Table Decor

First, choose a theme or color palette for your holiday tablescape. Inspiration for your event can come from a variety of sources, including linen colors or patterns, centerpiece ideas, your favorite colors or current holiday decorations.

Our inspiration this season came from these gorgeous navy blue and dark green plaid napkins we stumbled upon while shopping for the party. We used this coloring as a jumping off point for the remaining décor pieces; table runner, centerpieces, candle scents and coloring, place cards and favor tags.

Add Texture to your Holiday Tablescape

When creating a table setting, choose a variety of colors and textures for your linens, chargers, plates, and centerpieces for visual interest. We selected seagrass round placemats to pair with black acrylic chargers and bright white plates; adding these 3 colors together along with the different materials, made for an interesting design.

To finalize our table settings, we added our inspiration napkins and place cards sitting in festive brass bell holders. And to pull the entire table design together, we added a white table runner with light green striping and a simple, yet stunning centerpiece.

Tips for Choosing a Centerpiece

When incorporating plaid into a holiday tablescape, let that be the focal point of your design. We opted for a neutral centerpiece that added value to the table without diminishing the design. We chose a 36” distressed black wooden box that we filled with three small alpine trees and holiday ornaments in our table’s coloring. One of the things that I love about these type of boxes, is that they are versatile and can be used for virtually any occasion by swapping out the contents.

The greenery paired well with our color palette and added freshness to the table, while the gold and white ornaments filling two clear glass jars connected coloring found in our place card holders and candle favors.

Creating Holiday Ambiance

Create an inviting space to enjoy your holiday meal through music selection, lighting and aroma. Choose a collection of music to play continuously for guests to enjoy, making sure it can be heard but that it’s not so loud that it impedes conversion. Dim your lighting to evoke a relaxing dining experience for party guests. And finally, fill your home and dining space with a subtle holiday scent.

We accomplished this by placing a Glade® Tree Lighting Wonder™ automatic spray to the side of our dining space, set to release fragrance every 45 minutes. We love how the spruce and fir scents blended with eucalyptus evoke the feelings of togetherness for the holidays.

It’s All in the Details!

Pull plaid into other subtle, yet important table details. For each place setting, we added custom designed place cards with our guest’s names written in script. Place cards are such a great way to add personalization to your tablescape and to make each guest feel special when sitting to enjoy their meal. Be sure to download your FREE place card printables at the end of this blog post.
