This muddled blackberry gin & tonic is a refreshing twist, on a classic cocktail. I love how simple it is to create, and that it uses fresh, easy to find ingredients.
The secret to this summer gin and tonic recipe is muddled blackberries. So, what exactly is muddling? And, how do you do it correctly?
How to Muddle an Ingredient
Whenever a recipe calls for muddling an ingredient, it is referring to the process of crushing an ingredient to release its natural flavors. However, there is a little more to the process than simply smashing the fruit or herbs!
For the best results, choose a sturdy mixing glass that won’t break during the process. Next, choose a gentle muddling tool. Some of my favorites are flat, wooden tools. Next, place your ingredients into the sturdy mixing glass and press and twist gently to release the flavors. Complete this twisting process two to three times for the best results. Mint is the recommended garnish for this summer cocktail! Have you ever wondered why cocktails are garnished with herbs? Garnishes aren’t merely decorative, they offer an aromatic impact to beverages. To gain the best flavor from your mint garnish, give it a little whack before adding it. Yes, I said, give it a whack!! This process intensifies the herb’s flavor profile. Simply smack it once while it rests on your cutting board, before adding it to your cocktail! I promise that you won’t be disappointed!
