During the warmer months, we eat outside as often as possible at our farmhouse style patio table. While our meals are simple and focused on togetherness, I do enjoy finding simple ways to brighten up our space. Oblong centerpieces that I can fill with seasonal greens or florals are my very favorite for this style of table. So, I whipped up this colorful centerpiece for some summertime vibes, featuring a modern rainbow motif using permanent vinyl.
This colorful centerpiece can be completed in just 3 simple steps using your Cricut Joy. It amazes me every time how easy it is to create fun projects with my Cricut Joy. It’s functional and simple to use. Keep reading for more fun photos and the how-to for creating your own colorful patio centerpiece.
DIY Modern Rainbow Centerpiece
I was inspired by a project in Cricut Design Space featuring modern rainbow graphics in black and white. To add a little twist to the concept, I chose to use a bright, summery color palette; navy blue, turquoise, orange and mustard yellow. For the best color results, choose either a monochromatic color scheme, or complementary colors from the color wheel.
Step 1:
Spray paint your chosen planter a solid base color using outdoor spray paint. I evenly coated my wooden planter using white spray paint, and 2-3 coats for full coverage. Allow 15-20 minutes in between coats for drying.
Step 2:
In Cricut Design Space, create a new project using this rainbow motif, then size the arches to match the height of your chosen centerpiece vessel. With Cricut Design Space, you can design and create from anywhere, quickly and simply. I found this design inspiration by searching “Planter” in the Project prompt. I scrolled until a concept popped out at me, and then I moved along to bring it to life.
For our project, we sized the largest rainbow arch to approximately 3.5 inches. When you are ready to cut, choose settings for mat-less, permanent vinyl, follow the prompts given for loading it into your Cricut Joy, then choose “Cut”. The Smart materials are amazing! I love that I can simply insert my chosen color and material into the Cricut Joy without worrying about whether I have the correct mat option on hand. I simply choose the correct settings in Cricut Design space, and watch my perfect cut emerge every time. After the cutting is complete, “Unload” your sheet of vinyl and repeat using your other color choices.
Step 3:
Using transfer tape, place your chosen colors onto your painted centerpiece. For our design, we opted for alternating colors, but you could also add single color rainbows for a quicker project option. If you choose to alternate colors, remove the entire design onto transfer tape, then use scissors to separate the rainbow arches for single application.
Have fun with your design ideas! Once we finished applying our permanent vinyl, we filled the colorful centerpiece with white flowers. It’s the perfect pop of color for our backyard dining table.
